KUNO. The Journey of the Artist

Growing up in the coastal suburbs of San Sacramento, Kuno is a multimedia artist who has been exploring sound since he was old enough to totter between his father’s work console and the couch where he and his brothers slept. Using what he could find amid the urban flotsam to create his own instruments, and later refitting his school-issued techbook to produce synthesized tracks, Kuno’s audio projects continue to be heavily influenced by the real and mimicked noises of everyday life. His projects incorporate modified recordings of human life, nature, and media alongside acoustic and electronically produced music to create rhythmic and patterned audio expressions that question the boundaries between sound and music.

Kuno draws inspiration from alternative genres of music that seek to create and explore unconventional sounds. Kuno is specifically drawn to music from the 1970’s and 2020’s. He’s heavily influenced by artists like Bon Iver and Glass Animals, who use distortion and various electronic synthesizers to produce kaleidoscopic sounds. Kuno overall enjoys the older genres of dream-pop, electronic, funk, and rock music, taking inspiration from Tangerine Dream, David Bowie, and 100 gecs as well. He is interested in how people react to the combination of familiar sounds–both instrumental and from everyday life–with unsettling, unfamiliar sounds he synthesizes.
